Dude...germany was not opressed, the Jewish population in europe was. That was Hitler's use of propaganda. If the iraq people were soo fucking god damn oppresse, they would have done the same thing as the French did soo many years ago, revolution. You can't force anything on anybody. People either want it, or not. Look at the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the war in Afganistan ( BTW the Canadians are there now cleaning the mess, and doing what the millitary schould do....help people)

I would probably go if it was a worthy cause, not because a selfish president wants oil or something. I'll admit taht id be scared as shit and im sure almost everyone there would be. how could you not be scared with bullets and bombs going off everywhere. but id do my best to man up. i think id go into the war as a sniper if i could, because they know a shitload of survival stuff and are stealthy and probably wouldnt get killed. also you would feel like youre actually accomplishing something if you go after a high ranked person or something. what id be most scared of the is being taken captive and tortured and that stuff. I would die fighting before i let them get to me

You have no idea man. You know how hard it is to start a revolution with all the new technology? You know how long it's been since a major revolution has occured?

Iraq was opressed. It was a dictatorship in which people were shot for breaking the law. Fear was enstilled. I would love to see you "start a revolution" in a country controlled by fear.

Just the Canadians are cleaning shit up? The military's job is not to help people, it is to defend. Yes it is in question whether we are defending something in Iraq, but the military's job is to defend, not help. Should the government feel it is sufficient to help, then it is done.

Do you have any idea how bad Vietnamese people were opressed during the war? Do you know what the Vietnamese and Korean governments spent their money on pre and post-wars? Military budgets. They didn't give their people shit. They were opressed. They ate what they grew, and if crops failed they died. They lived off of bread, rice, and water. They got no suppourt from the government. If that's not opressed, I don't know what is.

you know why saddam is on trial right now? well one reason is for the brutal killing of thousands of innocent people. and the french revolution was extremely risky, any revolution is. had they lost, every single participant would have been killed. and even when it's successful, participants are still killed.

Saddam's regime was replaced by America's regime which has also managed to kill many people. And once America leaves (hopefully soon) another dictator will take over and fuck it up all over.

anyways, now, thanks to americas fighting in irag, iraq is in shambles, on the verge of a civil war. albeit, saddam was a dictator and needed to be stopped, but their are better ways of stopping a dictator than by causing mass panic and violence in irag. iraq is undeniably much more dangerous now than it was during saddams reign. anyways, saddam was not threatening america in any way. i prefer isolationism over brutal enforcers who create more of a problem by causing war than if they had not created a war

with all the conflict in the middle east and the mix of ambitions from nations, it is not with out reason that there will be a large scale war, but i doubt that the U.N. if it does have any power will stop it from errupting into WW3.all it takes is a heated momemnet and the unconditional yet pointless commitment of one nation to another to make this a big deal over pretty much nothing.

actually fighting is one of our most carnal instincts. People are drawn to war and violence for the same reason we are drawn to skiing. For a challenge and a battle.

While soldiers battle an enemy, skiiers are trying to "battle" a backcountry line, urban rail, 60 ft transfer gap in the park etc, we are both using innate instincts such as adrenaline and fear that alter chemical compounds in our brain that give war or skiing a sketchy line such a rush....

To break the issue down to its core you could say people are drawn to combat the same way we are all drawn to skiing- To conquer the unknown and dangerous and to cheat death.


I would also like to point out that the more articulate posts in this thread have come from the people that would fight for their country, contrary to the "anti-war" cowards that cannot put a coherant sentence together.

while you are right that people are naturally drawn to violence, that does not make people who are anti-war "cowards". sometimes it takes more courage to stand up to the government and authority than it does to go and fight in a war that you are forced to fight in.

I would also like to point out that joining the military transcends wealth. My bestfriend who is extremely wealthy is going to Annapolis, i know several other upper middle class kids like myself who are in Iraq with the USMC as enlisted soldiers...serving my country has nothing to do with money for me, but for honor and duty

It is, and it shouldn't be. Killing people should be wrong, no matter how you do it. Living in civilized society will give you at least SOME core principles, such as watching someone die, watching someone die who you just shot, and feeling bad. It seperates true emotion from guised actions when you don't just feel slight remorse in something like killing close up, but rather you'll feel it from back in the bunker after launching the nuke too.

well, pushing the big red button would not be quite as emotionally difficult as aiming directly at a person and then killing them. in both intances you are killing people, but when you are pushing the button yoyu are not actually seeing people die, so there are no gruesome images in your head

i had a response to your N.korea post but my wireless shat on me and erased it and im too lazy to retype it.

But along the lines of your other point: I think the increased number of Post traumatic Stress from the past 2 iraq wars is due to how war has become so impersonal. Im sure any weapons systems commander onboard a frigate in the Persian Gulf who just launched a Cruise Missile at an insurgent stronghold wonders about his victims- If they had a family, what they were like etc....these thoughts probably haunt them for the rest of their lives, because theyll never know what their enemy was like.

It seems that it would be easier to kill an enemy soldier in close quarters combat- It can be justified in the name of self defense, while pushing a button seems like murder of an innocent (in regards to offenses commited towards the button pusher) combatant

i would think it would be the opposite. if you never see the vistims, how would you be able to feel any guilt? whereas a soldier, although protecting himself, would see in person the damage he had done and could dwell on that image for the rest of his life

ok think about it like this:

You find yourself in a dark alley and you see one of your good female friends being raped by a sketchy guy, you act out of the urge to protect your friend and stop her from being raped by this despot- You beat the rapist to shit,ultimately killing him. You did that to defend your friend and to do the right thing, if you hadnt intervened you would be left with a guilty conscience for not stopping this horrific act being done to your friend

Okay, now youre driving, youre late for work/date etc and you run a redlight, suddenly a minivan pulls out making a legal turn or what have you, you t bone the minivan(filled with kids) killing everyone onboard. You walk away unscathed, however the people unknown to you that you just rammed are dead. Subconsciounsly you knew that running the red light was an inherrant risk to yourself and others, but did it out of the interest of yourself and others. However running the light was completely unjustified.

In the end, you would find that protecting your friend would be fufilling as you saved her life and did the right thing, but killing a minivan full of people you never knew would torment you for the rest of your life.

I hope i made my previous point a bit more clear, even though these werent the best examples.

I somehow doubt that you're friends are actually fighting on the ground and getting shot at. Historically, leaders decide who to fight, the upper class decide how we should fight, and the lower class gets killed fighting. War and joining the military doesnt factor out wealth in any way; if you're rich, you're going to get put in a command position. If you're poor, well, unless you're really good at flying a plane or sniping targets, you're pretty much fucked. Thats the way its always been in war, and history will always repeat itself.
