Why is it that people are stuck on the misconception that you have to be able to make something better before you can criticize it? By that logic, you can't complain about your Trouble Makers falling apart because you couldn't make a better ski.

haha. I think the reason that most film-makers don't take them seriously is because they mostly review maistream, high-budget hollywood movies, not because they have not made any award winning movies.

There is no reason that a person who is an avid member of the ski community can't criticize such a large aspect of the sport such as film-making.

i couldn't agree more with that statement. People who are afraid to face criticism should place their work in the public sphere. Furthermore, it is impossible to evolve one's abilities without receiving any form of critique.

Is Burrough's video perfect? Most certainly not, but I don't think he ever claimed it was.

That being said, I think it's pretty lame for Mikee to say he could do a
" better job," especially without offering us any evidence of this. Likewise, I find it odd that a guy who finished his argument by claiming that video production is highly subjective would even state that something is better or worse than his own work.

I mean, what constitutes good or bad? What are the established standards? What criteria do we apply?

Is Warhol's " Brillo Boxes" any less artistic than the frescoes Michelangelo painted in the Sistine Chapel?

If you are applying a reletavistic approach to all of this, you can't legitimately sit here and claim your own work is better, especially without really showing us any of it ( to clear up in advance, that was a response to Mikee).

Fuck it, Michelangelo sucks and I could paint a way cooler design on the Sistine Chapel, but ummm, ugghh, I ran out of paints, my brushes are dirty, and my mother grounded me. So yeah, I guess you'll just have to take my word for it.

All that to say, the content of the teaser is ridiculous. I mean, if Mikee doesn't think that Casabon, Zicat, DB, and Godbout are as good as his friends, then I guess just about everyone in the ski industry was way off their rocker when they decided to sponsor them, send them to contests, and put them in movies.

As for Burroughs, he's doing this for the fun of it, and because he loves it; he isn't running a business and I can absolutely guarantee he hasn't made a cent from his work. Enjoy it for what it is.

I do belive that the trailer, and those skiers are unoriginal.

I personally believe originality is by far the most important attribute for somethign to be "good".

Thus, I feel I could make a better movie.

Well, in that definition, I feel that everything is original because no two things can be exactly alike.

Thus, now that we have established that everything IS infact original, we must begin to discuss the scale on which we measure originality.

I would say, personally, that influence does not mean you can not be original. It just means your originality has an influence.

In this specific context of ski movies, I am talking about originality in the sense of different from the normal practices of creating ski movies. You can't tell me I can't escape those normal practices.

Even if I borrow practices from other art forms, and apply them to ski movies, it will certainly be original.

well there are different definitions of original, and mine was taken from the same place yours was, I see now, but mine was more of what I am talking about.

I mean that if you take something from somewhere else, and put it somewhere new, then it is original in that it has never been done before in that area.

Otherwise, you can say that anything in this universe is unoriginal just because it contains atoms, and since those atoms have been used somewhere else, anything using atoms is unoriginal.

If you were to ask a real professional, hollywood cinematographer if the shots in that trailer were up to par I would assume he would say no.

If you were to ask a real professional artist if they though copying the same format that has been around for over a decade and simply doing it bigger and better was considered progress, they would probably also say no.

dude I don't agree with you, burroughs got his style in the editing process, watch his last year trailer or movie too. You can clearely see a certain style of editing. Maybie it's not you're style of editing, but by saying it's not original It's like telling you don't like Dre cause you only listen to rock. I mean if getting his own style is not original then what you need to do?

Sure Mikee, its unoriginal in the sense that it shares the same basic format as um, every ski movie recently made. Opens with some scenery / people / timelapse shots, some abstract voiceover from something most people won't know, then goes right into the shots. This is even just a damn trailer and the movie will be exactly the same with more footage.

Are the shots perfect? no. Are the skiers perfect? no. Will this be the best movie ever made? most likely,no.

You're going to have to appreciate this movie for what it is. East coast skiing, with a bunch of relative unknowns for the mass skiing world, low budget, and a bad snow year. Now look at what the movie does have. It has some ballsy skiing, some creative skiing (being on the east coast helps), some creative angles, and some damn good shots from who? who is New Way?

I'm tired of seeing the absolutely polished look of some movies recently... beautiful skiing but nothing raw, no talking, no insight of the skiers, just shot after shot, which gets boring. I'm hoping this movie switches things up a bit, gives me something new and interesting to look at, and I can't wait to see it.

That is exactly what I mean, I see this movie as being just that, shot after shot of the same old thing we have already seen 1000 times. Why do I want to see it again? I dont. I want to see something new and fresh.

Charles is in college, he had to work hard in the summer to have money to bought his cameras and all that kind of stuff... who are you to said that is job isn't original without giving solution to be more "original". i thought that teaser was really interesting and i'm really stoked to see the final result.

I think the movie will be really enjoyable to watch. I cant wait to see it. And keep in mind that Burrought kept most of the good shots for the real movie.

not all teasers are like this, but the goal of mine was more to get people stoked on the movie with good skiing and good cinematography (which obviously mikee disagrees).
it was not really my goal to reproduce the entire vibe that the movie is going to have in a 2-minute video.
for example, take the wski106 trailer. could have anyone ever guess the concept of this movie by viewing the trailer ? if yes, go find nostradamus' tomb and kick the shit out of him, cause you're gifted.
I'll make a final comment on this and after, please, let's stop talking about the never-ending debate.
I am not saying I just revolutionnized the ski movie industry right there, but to say that it totally unoriginal would be kind of pushing it also I think.
Ski movies will forever stay what they are, SPORTS VIDEOS. No matter what you want or what you say, you can't make a Hollywood-style movie when you have no actors, no scenario and no script.
If you plan on doing a ski movie with a scenario, I suggest you waste one hour of your like by watching the skateboard movie "The search for Animal Chin" by Plan B. They included a scenario in this movie, and it is absolutely disgusting and ridiculous.
Back to the sports video, if you want to make something original and come up with a good concept, go for it and I totally respect that. The fact is, except if your movie is absolutely perfect (which it probably won't) you will get much hate from people, and at the end of the line, I think making a ski movie is about showing what you can do to other people and resume your season in a 30-minute video and get people stoked about it.
Most people will say "Robot Food was just that, originality blablabla". Robot Food was good, really good, but it was still a typical snowboard movie. It was riding with lifestyle, only with a "different" style of music. They did not reinvent the snowboard movie industry.
And about mikee's comment on cinematography, this is another point I suggest you forget about. The fact that you want every shot to make you go WOW, and now call me pessimistic if you want, will likely never happen. Again, skiing is a sport, and it's not like hollywood where you can light up your stage, decide of your scenery and so on...
Also, if you have ever filmed someone, you have probably missed a shot once...and you know riders hate it when you miss a shot. Let's say you want to make everyshot WOW you, that would mean you would have to make somewhat of a shot that is difficult to execute and an angle never used before. If you were shooting a hollywood movie, and you missed your shot, you just tell your actors "do it again", they,re paid for that. But in skiing, let's say you're with someone attempting this very very technical handrail and he's been sessioning it for 2 hours, and he gets it and you miss the shot because of your "original shot". You're dead !
That's why I think you will never see a movie with every single shot being perfect (and that is if we all have the same definition of a perfect shot).
I think MSP's shots are pretty close to perfect right now, and yes their movies suck, but the cinematography is was ahead of any other aki movie company in the industry. Are all their shots perfect ? no.
No one will risk everything for a good shot with a risk to miss trick of the year.
That's if like everyone missed Tanner's cab 9 over Chad's because they wanted to be "original".

Berman is a better cinematographer in my opinion.

And as far as perfect shots, it's really hard to get non-pro rider to wait instead of dropping in while you have to get a new angle or adjust the camera or something. So getting perfect shots all the time is hard

and for the record mikee...... in my opinion david's 270 in was better than hornbeck's in photoplay they are both real dope but just sosmething about davids makes me like it a tad better

Hmmm, the thing is, just because getting perfect shots is hard, does not mean it isn't worth the effort.

And yes, I realise you aren't trying to revolutionize the indrustry, I just wish you were. That's all I'm saying is that someone needs to step up and do something different.

The last thing I'd like to say is that a refreshing break from the similarity in ski movies that I mentioned are TGR movies.. people actually talk, you get to know the individuals, share their travels, accomplishments, defeats, etc.. in fact, im going to watch mind the addiction right now.

i am loosing faith in all ski movies, some are so tech and the jibbing is unbelievable but the camera work is very poor. other movies are high budget with great camera work but the skiers are big hotshots who dont realy do much in the way of progression *cough pbp*

that is one sick trailer, hey, its just a trailer, not the whole movie, and it does show some really sick skiing and filming and the small intro looks really cool, which give a + on the editing side.

As far as sponsor support, charles, you could get some if you would be looking for it, and you would be asking people for it. You got the movie for it. As far as having people helping you, you dont want to affiliate yourself with anyone. just to clear this up. But this is gonna be a sick movie, and probably one of the sickest after the top 6 big production companies out there. Keep it up!
