This is a very controversial topic so I would like to see a heated debate about it. It seems to me that whenever something comes out that attempts to make skiing more mainstream or "cooler" a ton of people say its bad for the sport and say we shood keep it "core".... for example, roxy, which is considered a cool company for mainstream fassion is getting into the sport and the majority of people think it is a negative thing. But, when Matt Harvey did an interview with The Ruide Guide he said the point of newschoolers was to bring skiiers together to show kids that is was ok and even "cool" to be a skiier... So my question to you is in the future of skiing do you tihkn it will be labeled as "cool" and do you want it to be?
^good point.. taking shit isnt fun... im just curious about the topic because people hate on people who try to make it more mainstream but they also hate on people who make fun of skiing for not being mainstream
i think later, when my generation is adults and have children, most of them will ski because most of their parents will snowboard and it wont be "cool" to snowboard because your parents r doing it, like right now it isnt "cool" to ski cause all of the "old" people ski, so then we will all be able to brag to our children how we were newschool skiing when newschool skiing first started
I ski because I like it. I don't care if it is mainstreem or whatever else people may label it. I ski how I like. i don't ski park because it is the trend. It is fun and enjoyable, I like the people I meet on the mountain and the runsh I get when making first tracks on a powder day. I don't care if I take shit, I can defend byt saying I ski because I like to ski.
I like it when people who dont know me give me shit about skiing. In my area nobody skis, skiiers all race and snowboarders are the only ones who do rails. After those guys have hassled me, I meet them on the mountain and fucking blow them away. That is the best feeling ever. It doesnt even have to grow, what the hell do I care. I'm not really bothered.
If I had more energy, I'd burn that young mans face
fuck everyone else, i'm a skier, the end. i dont care if we become more mainstream, cas we will always be remembered as the core kids that helped push it to where it is.
gangsta raps lyrics are all the same, Someone gets shot, someones frontin, someones a wangsta, someones benchpressin, someones makin fried chicken, and the beans dont burn on the grill. You can see that shit in kentucky. Fuck the bronx, deep south bitches-scientist
i see what your point is becasue i am like the ONLY skier in my grade/ almost whole school and i get made fun of hard core for it...i have gotten made fun of for like several years but know i just dont give a shit...but i think it would be nice for more kids getting into the sport see it as a cool thing beacsue then they dont have to worry about getting made fun of just becasue they ski instead of snowboard...but then again...if they dont ski becasue some fag called him a loser than do u think he would stay with the sport anyways?
i ski cause its fun....i may not be that good right now but i will ski and i dont care if i look cool or my skis are too short or too long or i did this or i did that and whatever they do i dont care just as long as they dont ruin the true sport of skiing
I'm pretty sure we all ski because we like it. If skiing all of a sudden became "not cool"(which it can't just be) then I'm positive that the only skiers we'd lose would be the posers that we don't want to be around us anyway
skiing will always be cool to us (NS) skiing doesn't need a label to tell me what i already know and as far as how mainstream things will be its weird because a lot of people look at QUICKSILVER BUYING ROSSI but at the same time ADIDAS SOLD SALOMON so both big corporations no doubt (caps are so people notice the most important part) that quicksilver may the begging who knows nike could start pumping out boots (they already make jackets) adidas still will make goggles and from there who knows but its not like quiksilver hasn't been in skiing for some time now as it is one of the bigger sponsors that candide hasn't dropped.
'kevin whyed nils pull you out?' 'Cuz i was touchin bitches.' 'No seriously why did he put scott in for you.' 'Scott doesn't touch bitches.'
^ no offense, but that's all i've been hearing for the last 3-4 years and have yet to be impressed by any chick. i mean, there's middle school kids throwing better stuff than all the 20-25 yr old girls.
^ sadly hes kinda true, sarah burkes seg last year in redtape was pretty weak in my opinion. in the pipe run she pretty much did the same thing over and over for like a minute.
but anyway i think newschool skiing will deffinatly be "cool" in the upcoming years. but i have mixed feelings about it. if it is "cool" then skis will be cheaping and shit like that. but there will be a lot of posers. either way i do care, ill just ski.
"collars up are officially gay, but layering 2 polo shirts is still acceptable"
"r u sayin we r being censored by da goverment?
fuck pussy dick suckin lip"
personally i like to take my core group of friends (naturally all freeskiers) and just argue with anyone who thinks that skiing isn't cool. that is quite fun particuarly because we are the smartest kids in school and just dominate the arguement. then to add insult to injury, we own those damn snowboarders on the slopes
the thoughts of the general youth public are basically "snowboarding is cool cuz they do jumps and skiing is for old people in one peices". so its really not considered cool,, and i really couldn't care less
the more popular the sport becomes, the cheaper stuff will get, there's no denying it. right now i could go to sportcheck and pick up a whole snowboard package (board, boots, bindings) for $300 where as my new skis (just the skis) will cost over double that.
for some reason people seem to have a problem with the term "mainstream" its like if other people like it then its automatically bad. wut the fuck! who cares wether its mainstream or not, just pay attention to the substance man.
hold up bagwell just took a massive shit in the hall
for this i will go about barefoot and nake, i will howl like a jackal and mourn like an ostrich micah 1:8
Some people seem to be misunderstanding the point of this post.. its not to debate why we ski or what skiing means to us.. the point is to debate whether or not we wood like skiing to be labeled as "cool" to the public eye... i wouldn't mind either way but it would be nice because increased popularity would as mentioned above bring down equipment costs.
thats not true the eqiupment costs will still be just as much if not more...example...hockey....look how many people play hockey in the world and how popular it is and look how expensive it is to play...samwe with sportd like paintball and baseball...
face it, bitch. girls will never be good at skiing. it will be about 50 years before girls will be landing switch in pow, 27 years before they start spinning more than 270 on rails, 58 years before they start spinning all 4 ways, etc.
fuck guys, we really are takin this to seriously. but here's what i think: The people who are a part of the the mountain culture know who we are and how much more we throw down. the average skier in the park would kill the average snowboarder. Everyone who rides consistently knows this. Skiing is cool and, in our little world, mainsteam. the question is, should we let the rest of the world in on our little secret? I vote no, because then we lose that sense of rebellion, progression, and our identity as independant athletes to the rest of the world.
^thats kinda contradictory tho... cause generally wen a sport become mainstream it grows due to popularity.. and generally the bigger it gets the more riders mean more better riders which usually means more progression.. so i dunt see how going mainstream wood stop progression
You know, skiing is really gay and stuff, so I can totally see why everyone thinks it is... gay and stuff, so, you know, I kind of don't really see where skiing is going in the future you know? Cause I totally don't really think it has a future, since it's so gay and all.

in my mind, its all about respect, and as long as skiers are respected on and off the mountain, i dont mind if it gets more recongnition. I think its really excitiing to think about where the sport will go, and if it gets more "mainstream", so be it. At the very least you could see it as putting more money into the sport.
puttin the ummmmm in summer since 95'
Who really cares if it gets big or not.
It's huge as it is, so stop complaining.
90% of the kids on this site are not "core" skiers.
They are kids who saw it on the X games and bought $800 setups in their first year of skiing which was most likely this year.
I don't have a hatred for them, or think that it's ruining the sport. It just pisses me off when they complain about how more kids are going to do the exact same thing they did over the next few years.
