not really, sure it's not the "hippest" thing to do, but it's been happening for a few years now, just not at nationals
it's been goin down at jo's for awhile, and it wouldn't be too much different from that (assuming we're just talking about the halfpipe thing, right?)
yea, the way they score it is pretty lame, but it's not like it will kill freeskiing
"I think it's probably the worst thing that has happened to freeskiing in a long time."
It's called progression my friend.
It sounds weird, but the inverted guys are going to have to change their style to win and the freeskiers will have to up the ante to compete with the inverted guys. There could be some interesting hucks.
The "worst thing" is having the event at Killington, in the rain.
Does it annoy anybody that the first trick landed in Not Another Ski Movie WAS SEVEN AND A HALF FUCKING MINUTES INTO THE MOVIE???????????????? i paid for a ski movie... not a tour of a lightbulb factory
this comp will surely be judged by aerials judges who don't know shit about our sport. they say 20% difficulty, how the fuck are the aerials judges supposed to know that a nosegrab is harder than a mute grab, all they see all day is people spinning in the air like pencils.
I agree with offtrail that for the pipe contest it will help for the olympics, but the "big air" is horrible
i'm not totally sure what to think. as jeff said, JO's have had pipe, and this is just boosting it up into this comp. also. but, for those who say its horrible.. why's it so bad? do you really want the sport to just stand still for the next shitload of years until some dude decides that its time that we need to become something bigger and it suddenly does? yes our sport is new, but.. why is some publicity/exposure to a new comp/whatever bad for the sport? i understand how it's all about freeskiing yada yada yada, but...you can always ski for yourself, nobody stops you from that except you. in the end, sponsors pay pros, pros dont make as much as boarders even (total guess by me) because boarding has more publicity, and sponsors being able to pay pros more is bad? i just... am totally lost in how it could be.
how is it horible for big air. now people can hit the jumps and flip forward and not get the shaft. this is why Perkins will win. he easaly has misty 9 on the double, and he can hit the tripple. i'm claimin misty 12 on the triple.
40% for show is the biggest load of bullshit i've ever heard. fuck that, some kid who does a good trick but gets everybody excited about it gets a higher score than a quiter kid who does an amazing trick
its like giving Tanner more points than Candide becuase Tanner gets the crowd excited about his run by talking it up and jumping around like an idiot
the judging between the two isn;t bad, me and a bunch of kids i ski with did the Selections and the Nor Am for aerials in PC during december and i believe two of us got top 10 in Selections, and then like more got top 15 in the Nor Am....so i wouldn;t say the judges don;t have a HORRIBLE understanding of freeride
Boyz ... its only good for the sport!
Especially if halfpipe makes it to the 2010 games in Whistler. Besides, it will create great chatter between the new school and the old school. Infact, I heard Tanner is already starting in on Joe Pack.
Tanner Hall: "That faggot ass flip twister Joe Pack guy thinks switch is something that turns the lights out and misty is the tear in his eye."
Joe Pack: "that knucklehead Tanner Hall thinks a lay, double, full, full is something he did with his girlfriend and her best friend last night!"
uh guys, freestyle and freeride aren't really that different from one another. it's really really rare that a skier that's pretty decent at freestyle skiing doesn't have exposure to freeride. also, you're pretty fucking igrnorant if you think that judges don't realize a nose grab is harder than a mute, alot of people that are judges for freestyle events are well well aware of what's going on in freeride.
Skiing is the single most extreme form of motion attainable by a human being.
what are you guys talking about?? it would be sooo fun to have like Charles Gagnier and some aerial guy skiing a slopestyle run together and have them teach each other stuff and progress with each other. I predict more "360 twisters" like Niklas Karlstrom did in X=ten to come from this. remixed oldschool tricks being blending with newschool. imagine Jon Olsson doing a switch cork 7 twister. Tanner hall already did something like that in WSKI and it was sick. stop disprespecting your roots.
