Which anesthesia?

ok well on july 5 i have surgery to reconstuct my acl and i have 2 choices for anesthesia, i could have just general anesthesia and be knocked out, or i could have spinal anesthesia where i could watch the whole surgery, what do u think, which one?

Def get knocked out dude, if you were concious, think about how fucking boring that would get, awake for a long ass surgery, but completely paralyzed. I don't know about you, but I would be able to stand it.

I've done both. For myself, I like the spinal better. Reasons are:

- I felt better after the spinal. I also have a tendency to stop breathing when I'm under general anesthesia.
- It was cool to interact with the doctors while they were sawing and cutting my shit apart. I got to ask a ton of questions, and learn what they were doing while watching it all on TV. (This is the weird one. Like i said, I hate surgeries. But, something seemed so surreal about it. I became so interested in what they were doing, that I completely forgot it was me they were doing it to.)

Spinal. You won't feel all naseaus and shitty afterwards. Also, if you fall asleep duriing the surgery, when you wake up you remember your legs dont move, its really trippy.

You don't see it. They put up a sheet on your chest, so you can't see below your waist at all, unless they tape it and put it on a tv. So don't let seeing them cut you up affect your decision.

^ Yeah, absolutely. Check out my previous post. I'm a big pussy when it comes to doctors. I hate needels, I hate watching surgery shows on TV...

But, for some reason the surgery when I was awake didn't hit me like that. They even gave me the option of being knocked out, and I refused. To this day it still blows me away that I stayed awake. They gave me a video of the surgery, and I can't even watch it. Gives me the chills.

I'd stay awake, first off i'd be cool to watch, second, I usually vomit for several hours after waking up from anesthesia. So uh, stay awake.

If they set up a camera, it really is cool seeing them do the surgery, because you can't feel it so it feels like its not your knee. It's a good time.

wow, thank you for saying the meaning of anesthesia...seriously I've been trying to figure it out for days...haha

but anyway I'd get knocked out, it's a sickening feeling lookuing down at your gaping leg and seeing them tug around and scrape the shit out of it without being able to feel anything

^its not like they are laying my knee open, its arthroscopic, the bigest cut they make is like 3 inches to get the tendon they have to graph to make the new acl, and u dont look right at it, you see it on a tv screen

oh well I overshot the landing while biking, landed completely flat, my foot slipped off the peddal, and my knee dragge along the ground, slicing my skin and then rolling it up like adirty cinamon sausage rol. there was a gaping hole about 3 inches wide and long...and at the bottom there was a gigantic sausage roll of skin...

I didn't even notice that I had hurt myself, until my friend said something, and then it starting hurting...so I called my mom and she got mad at me because I wasn't supposed to leave the house wihtout phoning her..,

then we went to the walk in clinic, where I got a frozen knee (which is the most painful thing ever, the needle going into the broken skin and ripping apart my veins). Then the doc got an sos-cement cleaning pad and dgrinded the dirt out. Then I got 20 stitches, 3 inside.

A few days later, I got a fever because the shitty job the doc did, and my knee swelled up over the stitches, so they had to cut my swollen skin open to get to the stitches....oh yea that hurt, no freezing either.

Then they cleaned it AGAIN!!!!

And after that for 4 times a week I had to go to the hospital to get an iv drip so it wouldn't get infected agian...oh sweet harshness.

Then I went back to my school (grade 7 at the time), and my teacher thought I was faking it because I was in a wheelchair and she say me stand up for a second...then I went home and lied in ym room and played dave mirra 2 for a week.

Then it healed

Then I stopped rambling

i agree! i just had surgery and id much rather be knocked out. it was great. id get really bored just laying there/ watching my knee be torn open. go with the knockout dude. then you just fall asleep, wake up, and your all done.

my dad whos a nurse anesthetist(sp) said he would go with spinal because they can manage the pain better and you can watch the surgery

my friend has had both. please please please go for the general. i'm not going to go into it cause it's pretty scary, but trust me. i had mine with general and it was fine.

yeah my finger got crushed in a door and they had to do surgury to remove the clot that was forming in the finger so when they went to cut me open they didnt put enough anestheic in and it hurt like fucking crazy when they opened it up with the scalple

yeah i just had he surgery a few weeks ago and they gave me he same options. the people i talked o said even though you don't fall asleep during the surgery, they relax you a little bit so its not like being completely awake. also, since its not an IV, they insert a needle into your spine, which (from what i hear) hurts like a lot of pressure when the insert it bu then goes away.
i myself got the general because i don't want to remember a thing and i just wanted the surgery to be over. when i woke up i vomitted twice and i was done. it wasn't even real puke, it was like water.
i prefer the general mainly because there is less pain (with the exception of feeling a little sick when waking up).

being flexible won't really help before surgery, build up your quads, hamstrings, and calves. they fucking atrophy like there is no tomorrow. i couldn't believe how skinny my leg was after a week. i'm 7 weeks out of surgery still don't have any quads to stand on my leg while its bent. biking also helps.
what kind of graft are you getting? patellar?

well yeah that other shit 2, i ment all of it pretty much, and yeah i think , the front tendon, and yeah i bet u do lose alot of muscle, but i had a surgery were i didnt walk on it for like a month and they cut thought muscle and i didnt do anything and it came back to normal, kinda weird...
