one of my friends is Indian, however like most people he was born in canada. so he moves to my area and at school he would sit there and make fun of himself and his ethnicity to 'fit in'. im like wtf be youself and dont give in to all this racial shit, your 17 years old and its 2005!

i hate racists as much as the next person, but when people get pissed off at you for using someones skin colour to pick them out from a crowd of people example: "The black man in the suit" they are takeing it too far. I used those exact words to point out a fellow Rugby player, who i know on a first name basis but no one else did, and they all said that i was being racist because i said "the black man" Everyone become very uneasy and quiet as soon as i said it. I was not derogatory in any way. I refuse to become colour blind. Skin colour is no diffrent than hair colour, and we all use that to distinguish people. I hope no one here takes anti racism that far.

Racist discussions are the best ever, I don't think I ever laughed so hoard in my life as much as when we have racist discussions between my friends. I like people of all color and races but the jokes you can come up with are hillarious.

ya its really annoying when some dumb-ass says nigger and chink and stuff to "be cool". however it is still much worse if they honestly hate black people and chinese people. On the other hand there are kids that are the opposite and for example whenever you use a word like hat, no matter the context, they say "don't use that word, that is such a strong word". it fucking pisses me off, i fucking hate it.

yeah i hate when people overreact about that. if you say 'african-american' that is not always right. jamaicans are black and so are australian aborigionees. black is a way to describe someone. if you were asked to describe a flower, you would use color. you would use color to describe anything. i say that people are black, because they are. it's not being racist at all.

^In the context you're talking about, those words may be acceptable, but they're NOT "just words." Would you call a black person a nigger if you didn't know him? No, you wouldn't, thus proving the point that they aren't just words. They're derrogatory descriptors developed out of prejudices (not stereotypes, big difference).

I have a problem with "minorities" (quotes because many ethnic groups, for example, Mexicans, are no longer a small fraction of the population, but rather make up a significant portion) claiming racism when it clearly isn't racism.

There are a variety of reasons for this behavior, one being over sensitivity (of course, I'm white so I probably don't have the racist experiences they've had--in short, I don't necessarily blame them). Many ethnic groups are taught through their experiences and through their upbringing (parenting) that white people (or other races) are out to get them. This creates a climate of oversensitivity, hence Apples' comments about a black person being offended for calling someone black.

Another aspect of this topic revolves around political correctness and the extremes to which it is being taken by politicians and other people in positions of reform. We're gradually working our way into a situation where just about anything can be seen as offensive. Some even bring deconstructionism into the picture here and attribute the rapidly increasing political correctness to the principles of deconstructionism.

It's a difficult situation to remedy because everyone is walking on egg shells, tip toeing around peoples' over sensitivity. The best way to go about it, that is if you car about NOT being racist, is to be respectful of others and their racial, emotional, and cultural baggage.

Racism breeds this hostility between cultures and ethnic groups.

Honestly, I don't think racism is abolished anywhere. I'll agree that it is less severe then say 40 years ago, but you'd be surprised with its prevelance today. The extent to which racist behavior and ideologies are expressed and developed varies geographically but I think just about anywhere you go, we still have people slowing progress down.

I know that's the case here.

Dude i got u all beat, i live in Howell Michigan, thats where the grandmaster of the KKK lived. The town next to us(kahocta)(sp?) is like literally the most racist town in the country. But anyway i go to school with a bunch of retards. Theres all these white kids that are like wannabe gangsters, and they sit there saying nigga this and nigga that and talking all gangsta. So then when a black person actually comes to our school they're all like what up my brother and watch everything they say. And the kid could be the nerdiest loser ever but they'd treat him like he's 50 cent or somethin just cuz he's black and they want to say they have black friends. God my school sucks.
