i agree, slug has some clever wordplay, but he's not that good of a rapper. i think a rapper needs to tell a story, while ryhming perfectly over the beat. therefore, discluding most "rappers" today. *cough*50 Cent*cough*

please hop off the slug hating bandwagon now.

slug appeals to white boys?? let's be serious here, most rappers nowadays will admit that the majority of their fan base is white. tell me, who else is slug supposed to extend his fan base to? he's from minnesota!!

also, when someone builds their career on being a battle rapper, they are obviously going to have to change their style down the road somewhere. as an atmosphere fan, i don't think his most recent stuff is his best work, but that in no way makes him a sell-out.

he knows that if people have to think too hard about what you're saying to them, records won't sell. he says it best himself...
If I felt as if I had somethin special to tell/Why would I work against myself and hide it under my belt?/I used to try to lace the phrases with magic tricks/Every paragraph needed translation attached to it/They saw the style, respected the craft/But all I did was confuse em, would try to get em to laugh/Painted pictures in the primer, no one got the pulp/Found the humor, the anger and the insult/Why should I waste any oxygen/Tryin to find the in-between-the-lines that they get lost within?

i'm surprised to see Tupac in so many lists..but that could be because i never really had a taste for his music. As for top 5? Hard to judge the best when it's not just the lyrical content but the way it is presented, and the beats that accompany the artist. To use an example (outside of rap) Bob Dylan has great lyrics and great sounding songs, but the man can't sing.
