IDk but i kno what your saying and it kind of seams like that. Its moving to more of the larger companies now to help "sell" the sport but i think with all the progression thats going on, it will not surcumb to it all together.

No man,

Skiing has been "owned" by large companies since pretty much the beggining, so dont say the sport has not progressed or wont progress. Also, while these large companies may be "running" things, I dont see any evidence of our sport being ruined and its really just getting better every year. Companies like Intrawest own the mountains we love like whistler and mammoth so really, we need them. But still there are small core mountains like A-Basin, Fernie and Marmott that are not corporatized.

Basically, shut up and stop bitching because really you dont know what you are talking about.

actually I do know what I am talking about...and large developers such as Intra-West consider skiing a waste of money compared to real estate...

When you decide to live in a ski town that has one of these devlopers present you will know the horrible pain of unaffordable housing, out of control rents and a reduced quality of life

ya this sounds like an "oh no the MAN is taking over" complaint. don't get your panties in a knot. like people before said, this is really the way it always has been. as long as there is a potential to turn a profit, the interests of large investors are going to spiked. we see many resorts owned by bohemoth companies, but i have yet to see how they have hindered the growth of our sport. if nothing else, they want to do everything they can to help it grow because that in turn helps profits.

Intrawest is evil, "Hey why don't we treat our staff, and the locals like shit so that we can distroy the local economy." They only want to do one thing and that is sell houses. In Tremblant over their most popular run they have a banner " DO you love tremblant, you can live here for ONLY 260 000$" They don't give a shit about you unless you have a big buck.

i hope intrawest buys up all the fucking bumblefuck ski hills and makes enourmous villages at the base with 10 starbucks for every 20 fuckin ppl

Big developers ruin Ski Towns...period! If you consider yourself a local or love your mountain you would understand....this massive new devlopment is not old and has not alwyas been that way...

Aspen was the first resort to tie real estate to skiing...then came Beaver Creek....then Intra West

their money DOES not go into building new rails...it goes into the parent companies wallets...fat rich foreigners are making money...

read the "Downhill Slide" eye opening insight into how big developers ruin the loacl economy of ski towns...

actually I am pretty sure a lot of the money goes into the ski hill, since places like Whistler, Tremblant, Aspen and Mammoth are mainly the best hills. its not a coincidence

skiing wont may become the next golf until it gets its version of tiger. it would not b that bad of a thing if big companies get more invloved, b/c that just means the sport is becoming more marketable, but it will prob. never get on that level, b/c there is no generations to connecet.. skiing is "new school" golf was an old mans game that young kids began picking up after watching tiger wood wear a Nike check

yeha obviously old ppl ski, but i talking new school, sportin twins, hittin jumps.. its the complete opposite of an old guy golfin n an old skiin, cause most old guys golfin can kick any young kids ass, n that is not true with skiing at all

skiing is in no way related to golf. complete opposites


skiing = winter sport. young skinny risk takers in good shape. (and by risk takers i mean you can get injured)

golf = summer activity. old fat folks. requires zero physical fitness. no risk at all.

of course it's an over generalization, but for the most part it's true. of course in skiing, you have old fat dudes that are good at it, and in golf, well, tiger woods lifts weights and trains like crazy just to swing a club.

it's almost like golf becasue many of these resorts now have living and some are even open all season complete with a golf course in it. i know N* is buiding a new village that should be done next year. It also sucks because it's getting bigger and they want to become a huge resort but they don't have the mountain to handle all these people.

My comparison is not at all related to the physical aspects of the sport...but rather that Golf is now a means to sell real estate...you build a cheap golf course, and sell the dirt around it for a ton of money. After all the lots are sold the developer leaves the course and lets it thrive or die on its own. Skiing is now becooming that very same thing. When intrawest finishes a project like Squaw Village and they have sold out of everything (condos, townhomes, retail spaces) they leave! And after that the only way to draw more money is to RAISE prices on retail goods...ski tickets, food prices, lodging...etc...

yeah I love going to Squaw and chowing on my 7$ hand roll and sapporo but the I see what has happened in places like vail and that is what is comming to Tahoe....not all bad, but you better have DEEP wallets...prepare to bend over and take it...75$ lift tickets are comming to a hill near you!!

Personaly it's all good. We need more money in this sport, evev if it's corporate mobey. I mean everybody thinks our sport is run big big companies who don't give a shit and we should be more like snowboarding and skating or whatever.

Well most of the skate/snow companies are owned by big corporations.

Hurley:Nike
ES emerica etnies: Nike
Nike skate shoes
the list can go on and on.

The main thing is that the companies need to keep the image and the sport core. Cause it's profitable to fit in a NICHE. Cause niche clients are rich and they buy over and over and over again.

Now that quik has allot of companies under the belt they'll become a major player. Well they have been a major player, the only difference is that mentality is different. But they did go after rossi and dynastar to get more brands.

And to come back to the begining skiing is already golf, cause with quik buying rossi they also bought cleveland (i think) and salomon as been mingled with Taylor Made for years.

Even the most core companies in snowboarding like LIB TECH and GNU are owned by bigger companies. Quik owns mervin MFG who makes the 2 brands. And Burton just bought four star. Talk about corporate.
Burton sells to all the lamest retailers and in big numbers. This way they can create divisions of the company taht are super core without losing money.

It's all the same. it all depends on the philosophy and the image of the company. And all of this is done from the start when a business guy makes his businees proposal. it just grows from there.

umm...EVERY THING!! Price of lift tickets, costs of lodgeing, costs of food...crowds, lift lines...just because mommy buys your lift ticket does not mean you should not be concerned...

additionally...reduced job wages due to international workers being flown in. Want to work on a ark crew next year? oh sorry we hired a bunch of argentinians who dont ski to work there for minimum wage...

no seriously, i would rather ski at a place with a huge budget- even if that shit goes mostly to condos who the fuck cares, ohmaybe your lift lines might be 2 mins longer, maybe youll see some ppl skiing in bogner 1 pieces, but all that money will trickle down to terrain parks and mountain expansion, plus more shit to do at the base and a nicer atmosphere- how can you not say that whistler village(INTRAFUCKINGWEST) is one of the chillest places on earth

mega resorts may be a nice place to visit, but i'll never live there. give me a slow ass fixed-grip two seater, duct taped gear, and brown bag sammies with five dollar pitchers any day. rich, careless entrepreneurs will always thrive in the greedy, capitalist society we live in. the key is to choose your battles wisely -- save the local mountain. don't rip off humble ski hills, support them. this holds true outside the industry as well. drink at your local brewery, buy milk at the neighborhood store and, for the love of all things snowy and fun, stop shopping at wal-mart. sorry 'bout the rant, i'm gonna go wash the preachin' hippy stink off my keyboard now.

i never said i was completely against intrawest. you can't argue that they have a good business model and a fuckshitload of money flowing out of their pockets. in fact, if they offered me enough money i'd probably sign one of their pre-printed "sell your soul" contracts

if you want to be a "vacation skier" thats great..but if you want to be a SKIER, someone who lives in a skit town, someone who works their ass off bartending or waiting tables to afford a pass, you may wish to recondsider your post. And btw, whistler village is straight up amateur hour...NO SOUL, NO VIBE...just prepackaged clubs/bars...you get the same experience at Mammoth or Squaw...same shit, same stores, same food, same prices....kind of like McDonalds....


Once your mommy stops buying your lift tickets youll learn...until then, enjoy it, kill it, thrive in it, but I dare you to move to a place like whistler to work and live as a skier...its not that easy
