Canada does have more opportunities than US. Think social health care (everyone has the same opportunity to be and stay healthy). Education costs are much less here and there's more government funding for post secondary education here. Canada isn't a social country though, so we don't have a lot more opportunities than US. Think Sweden (been a social country since the '30s) or Denmark (highest standard of living in the world) if you want to look at a country to compare US to.

but those countries also have obscene tax rates, regardless of ethics do you think it is ok for people to be forced into that high tax rate? say a guy makes 1000000$ a year, he MAKES that money for himself, and if chooses to not give any away, fine. Why should he be forced to pay for things such as health care and such.

It's businesses that should pay the highest taxes, not the individuals. And they should give back to consumers and employees because they are the ones that give them their high profits. I ask you, what's the greatest car company of all time. And I answer you Ford (although not anymore). Why was Ford so successful you ask, because Henry Ford believed that if he paid his workers well and treated them fairly they would buy his products. Guess what, it worked. The idea is that without the community you serve you are NOTHING. If you give back to your community, it will grow and you will grow. If you exploit your community, it will die and you will die. I'd also like to point out that after WWII it was socialist ideas that kept us out of a depression that could have been similar to post WWI.

Rebel what does giving back to community has to do with anything? There are plenty of businesses who love to hire illigal immigrants and pay them minimum wage. There is also a lot of companies that hire legal workers and still doesnt pay them shit and thats the workers that go through a job every 6 months. We live in a new generation where money is a lot more important then the relationship with your community or your workers.

Funny, I thought the same thing of your response. I'm being asked my socialist ideals. You're telling me of how it is in capitalist America. Do you see the lack of congruency here. To answer your post respectfully, there's only two things I can think of:
1) What does serving the community have to do with it? To that I say Everything. That's what socialism is based on. Perhaps if you reread what I said earlier it will be clearer to you.
2) Companies exploit workers. I know they do this, and I think it's disgusting, which is a reason why I hate capitalism. In the long run, companies are only hurting themselves though. Once again, I refer you to what I said earlier.

Rebel I'm not the one who tried to tie down socialism to capitalistic America. What Henry Ford did doesnt have to be considered socialistic event when a human being is not greedy and he shares his profit with the people that helped him achieve the goal. If you believe that socialsim leads to a better life then all power to you.

rebel i think the points that you have are true, however socialism does, in reality, have many problems and it is true that the same goes for any other ideology, but in reality a socialist country cannot really compete today with a capatalist country. Rich, hard working people do not want to support people who are lazy and collect welfare. Its true that not everyone collecting welfare is lazy and what not but to many people take advantage of that system. People should all be given the same tax rates regardless, and the sky should be limit in terms of what you want.

sweden and denmark have very high tax rates which affords everyone in the country to have a more or less equal chance at life.

when a purely capatilistic country, where its citizens are only concerned with their own lives, and not that of their countrymen, comes into the mix, the welfare state is so degraded that all members of that society do not have an equal chance at life. some are born into such poverty that they have no chance at escaping it. a cycle of poverty ensues.

i would much rather pay high taxes, ensure that i and my fellow citizens have good education, health and infastructure aswell as equal opprotunity, then to be a consummeristic materalist who thinks a plasma tv and a SUV will bring him pleasure.

I had a big well thought out reply to you, but then I lost it when my browser refreshed. That's extremely annoying. Instead of typing it all out again, I'm just going to say this, your idea of socialism is extremely incorrect. It's not just handing out welfare cheques, it's providing well-being and opportunities to all. That includes education and health care. If you give everyone an even playing field and they fail, then you don't have to give them welfare, because they failed on their own. Right now they get welfare because the system fails them. That said, there are some people that will always deserve welfare cheques including widowed single mothers, disabled, etc.

I just want to say that I agree that the sky should be the limit. I agree that competiton has value (I'm not a communist), and I even see value in consumerism (as an economics major I almost have to). I just don't agree with expoiting people who are already lesser off than you so you can make an extra dollar on top of the millions you already have.

I could be mistaken, but I think that he just read me say that I was a socialist in another thread simpily didn't understand based on his upbringing. I agree that he's not extremely knowledgable about the topic, but if he's at least willing to listen and consider the other sides point of view then all the power to him. If I'm wrong though, then everything I've said in this thread was all for nothing.

Capitalism.
For the most part companies DON'T exploit there employees. They pay them what they're worth. I don't think that a company should forced to pay someone a higher wage when someone else is willing to do it for less.

Taxes should be really low, both for individuals and companies. The money that the individual saves, he will 9 time out of 10, spend. He will buy a new car or a TV or skis. That money is invested into the community, and it helps pay someone elses wages. As for companies, the money they save from less taxes will be invested back into the company and into the community. Companies give more to the community than anyone else. They do this by paying to advertise at a skating rink, and (here in Grande Prairie) we have Oilmans Golf Tournaments where all the oil tycoons golf for charity. That among other things is how they invest into the community.

i live in sweden, and i must say that i would agree with rebel in his points.

medical everything is pretty much free here, and my schooling (meals and most activities) are paid by my town. also, about 130 bucks a month is given to each child for their transportations to school, for clothing and meals, thanks to higher taxes and to ensure most people the same chances at everything. and i believe its a good thing.

in another note, there aren't very many hummers here.

I too would like to stop debating here to worry more about exams. Actually, I just wanted to state my point of view, not debate it. I will say this though. I am an economics major. I fully understand the principals of consumerism, probably better than most. I understand it's value, but I also understand it's flaws and why it can't be relied on 100% to build a country. Truth is that there's a required balance needed (this is the more accurate definition of liberalism than repulicans use). There is no formula, so the difficulties lie finding the balance. I think that if you can't see that there is at least a balance required between capitalism and socialism then you're completely kidding yourself.
