This hp or a 12 inch ibook

We have a G4 and 2 PCs and I like both about equal. my grandparents are giving me money for a computer for graduation/birthday/going to college. I will be getting a nice amount of money for a good computer, but what im thinking is that it would be better to get a desktop pc for gaming and other stuff and then a laptop of some sort. If i did that i would want the lightest and longest battery laptop for the money (im looking to spend less the $1000 on the laptop) I would either get this awsome-light HP laptop: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1083434&CatId=0
or a 12 inch ibook with a 512mb of ram upgrade for like $1060. Im leaning twards the ibook becuase of the 6 hours of battery life. Im not worried about having to buy both mac and pc programs, becuase first of all, there are plenty of free programs for both (more for mac though) that are jsut great like The Gimp ((although that is now for pc too). anyhoo the HP is lighter, and is about $60 less if i ere to do that ram upgrade on the ibook. im leaning twards the iBook.

ok, jsut realized i never said a second of all as to why i wasnt worried about having to buy both pc and mac programs:

second of all, i get whatever i want for free from bit torrent.

I didnd't even read what you said, but get the iBook. Mac is always better when it comes to editing and whatnot.

that pc notebook is Refurbished too so its not exactly "new." your better off with the ibook - you can run virtual pc on it anyway if you have to use any windows programs. i do all my schoolwork that needs to be done on windows on my g4 powerbook with virtual pc

think for a second about how small a 12 inch screen is. I would consider finding someone with a 12 inch laptop or going to an apple store. It's REALLY small. I thought that was awesome at first but every person I saw with one was hunched over with their faces 6 inches from the screen. I used one at the apple store and it was manageable but I'd go for a bigger screen.

that's true.... but it's light as fuck and really portable. my friend has the 12" ibook and i have the 14, we switched one night and i loved it. i say get the Mac either way, and scrape together some 200 bucks for a bigger screen if you want...

na, i got a small screen with my PIII 500mhz laptop now and it is fine.

and that IBM is kind of a rip off. the g4 ibook would be faster, and it has a much better graphics card.

the hp also has 64 mb of video ram, while the ibook has only 32 mb of video ram so that is somthign for me to consider.

get the PC. I do video editing. and I use both Mac and PC but Macs are expensive and Macs are pretty much only good for video editing. but of course for $1000 you would be getting a 12inch ibook which will suck for any professional app. on the other hand for $1000 you can get a pretty sweet PC laptop.

so my final advice is if your going to get an apple laptop get nothing below a 15 inch powerbook or get a PC which will probably have a pretty sweet screen and use Avid Xpress DV

It really comes down to a preference between apple / pc.

I would personally choose something other than the ibook for a laptop, but that's just me.

I'm not so sure I would go with that particular hp/compaq laptop, though. Several reasons, one of them being that recently HP has been cutting back on their quality. If it had a long warranty I'd be fine with it, but the fact that it is also a refurbished machine makes me skeptical.

i wouldn't consider a 12 inch laptop of any kind unless you will be carrying it around with you alot. I have a 12 inch ibook and I love OS X and the mac hardware but I hardly ever take my laptop with me. I prefer to right notes in lectures opposed to typing. But I guess you said that you were getting a desktop and a laptop, so I think you should go for the ibook.

By the way, if you go with the ibook, make sure you get OS X.4 "Tiger".
