oakley and child laborers

im wondering if oakley sets up their locations in India and other 3rd world countries and make women and children work for nothing. Just wondering because im thinking of investing stock in them, and i would'nt want to spend big bucks on their products if they do.

yea, i'm with matt - if i'm not directly affected than i don't care - now if one of those damn kids messes up and it gets past inspection leaving me spending money on a faulty pair of shoes or sunglasses or what have you - than some heads are going to roll. but until than, leave the kids alone, at least they're making some money/hour.

you people make me sick. If it was happening in the U.S.A with these child laborers everyone would be all pissed. but i guess since its happening in a 3rd world country its ok. it does'nt piss you off that it costs nike like 1$ to make a pair of shorts but it costs you 30$.

I agree with the fact that child labour is wrong but I still wear nike shoes - mostly because I got them for free but thats not the point. The point is that we may think its wrong but we're too fashion conscious to really care. Not to say everyone wears Nike but A LOT of other companies use child labour.

I don't wonder why people flew planes into buildings, actually with the US's foriegn policy and all the terrorist actions it has committed, I wonder why it didn't happen sooner. Again, child labour is wrong (if anyone can justify otherwise I'd love to hear it) but I too was once in high school, and at one point or another I was insecure enough to want to be cool in other peoples' eyes so that probably influenced my purchasing habits (what brands I bought, etc.) I guess I'm just sick of people that think that they are above it all. I'd rather not get bashed by someone that, if only by law of averages, probably owns something that was created by child labour. That's my unarticulate rambling for now. later.

i'm not ignorant at all - but like, sit down and think about it. the world is nowhere close to perfect. people constantly complain about the price of things, but than what do you do? you still buy it.

people like nike (why does everyone always gotta bring up nike when tons of other people do it too) will keep charging a few hundred for shoes and shit that cost them hardly anything because people keep buying them.

i look at this like i look at vegitarianism (those vegitarians that don't eat meat 'cause it's curalty to animals, not because of the chemicals they give them that people dont' want in their bodies - get it?). the way i see it - the anmial is already dead, if i don't eat it, someone else will. that and meat is good.

if you care so much about the kids in china who make $2 a day, than do something about it, adopt a kid or whatever, just stop bitching at me because i realize the problem and know i'm not going to do anything. no point in yelling at me. if you care so much, don't yell at others, but shut up and do something - action's speak louder than words.

so i guess at the end of my rant i have just made myself a hypocryte haven't i? oh well - i wanted to say something, so something has been said. if you don't like it, well than you can just get in line so i can shit on your face.

it isnt really that bad it is just a way of liufe that they have grown up with for years. what we see asa terrible wage isnt that bad for them (its defunatley not good). the cost of living over there is so much cheaper than over in the western world. Also if they werent emplotyed by nike they wouldnt be able to live because there is no toher work out there.

when slavery was legal in the south, and the north bought cotton. that was a way the north supported slavery. although, the norht really needed cotton, and really had no other choice.

right now in other countries 2 cents an hour is practically slavery. and we have a choice on weather or not to buy their products. yet people still invest stock and invest lots of money towards nike.

all i want to know, if oakley has child laborers. no ones really answered my question.

Think about the alternative to child labour. Yah nike pays them 2 cents an hour, doesn't sound like much to us, but to them, that's a meal they wouldn't otherwise get. Nike doesn't FORCE them to work, they work because they have to to survive. Growing up in a rich country makes you so ignorant. You look at your childhood and think 'that's so terrible that those kids work for nothing and don't get to have any fun..' yah well, if they didn't work, most of them would probably starve to death. In a place like canada the GDP per capita is $24,800, in the USA it's, $36,200. Compare this to a place like ethiopia where it's a paltry 600 bucks a year. These people need every person in their family working so they can have enough money to survive. Take away the 2 cents an hour that 5 kids are earning in a family, and they'll die.

Alright I'm an American and I think child labor is wrong. They don't just work because they have to, a lot of those families are in debt over there so their kids are basically indentured servants. Most of them have to travel 10-20 miles to their workplace, usually on a beatass bicycle, and they come home in the dark. I'm sure those women feel really safe coming home the dark in countries where women's rights are recognized at the smallest extent.

On the other hnad you can't just blame rich, spoiled, and ignorant americans for contributing to the problem. You have impoverished american families in a low socioeconomic status still buying nike goods. These families are suffering the most from a 3rd world manufacturing base, because their job opportunities used to be more broad w/ a home manufacturing base. Don't blame ignorant Americans, blame materialism an opportunism.

ok, but lets say that child labour is banned throughout the universe and is punishable by death. What happens to those indebted families? How are they supposed to payback what they owe? Also, what happens to the poor countries that are dependant on companies like nike to give employment to their people?

I don't like the situation, but what can be done that's fair for everyone?

they should castrate one or 2 generations in these third world countries. these people are caught in a catch 22. to feed their kids they need to have more kids to work. by doing this there are more mouths to feed. we as a industralised(sp?) and civilised nation should bring this to their attention and do something about it

I can't believe some people are on here talking about nothing can be done. Jesus, we used to have child labor in this country, and England did as well. A couple decades after the second industrial revolution Britain and America instituted policies on child labor, work hours, and minimum wage laws througout the 19th and the early part of the 20th century. I actually think the answer is pretty plausible. Shit just up child labor wages for this generation up to something that's like even 2 American dollars. In the following generation the families will be for the most part out of debt, children can start getting an education and have more opportunities open to them even upon the completion of something equivalent to 8th or 10th grade. With a better educated 3rd world populace, in a couple generations after that women's rights start getting recognized, and w/ some economic assistance these countries start stepping out of the 3rd world genre. This time table is about the slowest one possible too.

Now you have these lonesharks needing another source of funds and they're putting their resources into something that might start resembling an economy. There is a practical solution to a problem like this, it's even evident in history.

u up child wages, company x moves out of coutry x into country y, where wages are less. domino effect.. as long as there is capitalism in the world, there will always be child labour. and as far as i know, there's very little chance that we will ever live in a socialist world, unless we all begin to recieve lobotomies. it's true, i am a cynic, but i also am realistic. i'm not saying that i support any unfair labour practices, but i really don't know what could be done about this issue.. obviously first world government doesn't either.
